Convert MXF files in three steps

1

Drop your MXF files

Drag individual MXF files or an entire folder into Parallel Media Encoder. The app reads MXF containers from Sony and Canon cameras and displays source metadata, resolution, codec, and duration.

2

Choose your output codec

Pick ProRes (Proxy through 4444 XQ), H.265, H.264, or DNxHR. Set quality mode, resolution, and frame rate — or use a built-in preset for YouTube, Vimeo, or your NLE.

3

Encode — in parallel

Hit Encode and Parallel Media Encoder transcodes multiple files simultaneously using your Apple Silicon hardware media engines. On an M4 Max, 8 MXF files encode in 119 seconds vs 197 seconds sequentially.

Preserve what matters

MXF files carry timecode, camera settings, reel names, and production metadata. Parallel Media Encoder passes it all through to your output files.

  • Timecode pass-through — source timecode preserved in output
  • Camera metadata — model, lens, exposure, and recording details
  • Folder structure — recreate source directory layout in output
  • "Transcoded By" field — always know which files have been converted

MXF conversion FAQ

Can I convert MXF files for free?
Yes. Parallel Media Encoder's free version converts MXF files to ProRes (all variants) and H.265/H.264 with full quality control. You can queue up to 8 files and encode 2 simultaneously — no watermarks or time limits. Upgrade to Pro ($39, one-time) for full chip-tier parallel encoding, DNxHR output, and more.
Which Sony cameras are supported?
All Sony cameras that record to MXF containers are supported, including FX3, FX6, FX9, FS5, FS7, a7S III, and Venice (MXF — Venice RAW is not yet supported). The app reads XAVC S, XAVC S-I, and XAVC-I codecs inside MXF wrappers.
Does it preserve timecode and metadata?
Yes. Parallel Media Encoder passes through source timecode, camera metadata, and reel names to the output file. It also embeds a "Transcoded By" field so you always know which files have been converted.
Can I batch convert an entire folder of MXF files?
Yes. Drag a folder into the app and it imports every MXF file inside. With Pro, you can encode up to 10 files simultaneously and optionally recreate the source folder structure in your output directory.
What about Canon MXF files?
Fully supported. Canon Cinema EOS cameras (C70, C300 Mark III, C500 Mark II, C200) that record XF-AVC to MXF containers work out of the box. Drag them in and convert to ProRes, H.265, or DNxHR.
Can I automate MXF conversion?
Yes. Pro includes watch folders that auto-transcode new MXF files as they arrive, a full CLI tool (pme transcode) for scripting, and a REST API for integration into post-production pipelines.
